Truth Social’s Biggest Lie: The Truth

In a weird alternate reality somewhere, leaders of nations have their own social media platforms, regurgitate ‘fake news,’ create echo chambers perpetuating violence and discrimination, and diminish any notion of accountability. In our reality, that ‘alternate reality’ happens to be the home of freedom — the United States.

“Truth Social”: A Platform with Little Socializing and Even Less Truth

In what started out as a productive day of studying, tiredness and a desperate need for entertainment crept upon me. What better entertainment than social media? Even better, Truth Social.

So I the only reasonable thing — set my profile picture as an eagle, created a bio about how much I love America (and Trump), and, it appeared, I was ready to go.

I must admit, it did take me a while to come to grips with what was laid out before me. Unsure whether others, too, were trolls like I, or whether they were espousing genuine views, it was when I encountered the President’s ‘Truths’ that I came face to face with the reality of what I was seeing: a really dumb social media platform for really dumb people.

Long story short, my account was removed after someone figured out I was a poser, maybe the username, maybe the picture or the bio — or maybe even the ‘Truth’ of my cat Bill with his cute MAGA hat. And that was my insight into free speech that the Magapotamians defend with mind, body and soul.

Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state
When people say their kids need to “socialize,” it inevitably implies engagement with the outside world — different viewpoints, people, and ideas. Otherwise, socialization would happen exclusively at home, without outside interaction — but that’s not the case. When it does happen in isolation, the consequences can be severe, as seen with the effects of lockdown on children. Social media, at its core, should facilitate engagement with people you wouldn’t ordinarily interact with. This is just my perspective, of course, but at the very least, you’d expect to encounter a wide range of views. That doesn’t seem to happen on TS.

I must admit, there were people talking about wholesome things: dogs, photography, food. But undoutedly the biggest groups were the politcal ones, as expected by a social media site created by a president. Here the repudiation of the truth was immense, there was no diversity in opinion, and it was a conspiray theoriests dream.

Perhaps, this is a good point for me to tell you the two replies I made which may have contributed to my banning on the platform.
In response to someone who stated Obama was a traitor to the US by alleged money sent to Iran, I alerted them to the Iran Contra affair overseen by none other than the creator of the MAGA slogan…Ronald Reagan.

Second was my reply to someone who stated that an indivudal who called Elon Musk’s doge savings of $40billion ‘nothing’ were somehow ungrateful. Once again, I informed them that as a fraciton of government spending in the year 2024 that is about 0.593% of GDP. To put it into perspective, Trump has already given Israel around $12billion.

Without me even checking them on the validity of their actual argument, instead using their argument to counteract their point, I was on the receiving end of some pretty nasty stuff.  I could tell that some things were clearly not the right kind of truth for this lot.

Anyway, after a couple, no not hours, minutes that cesspit of politcal bile became overwhelming so I turned my attention elsewhere. The King.

I should add that I’m a student of politics, and though it may not be politically correct to say, Goebbels would be incredibly jealous of the system Trump has going on this site. I mean, think about it: a media platform owened by a political giant and leader of the free world, used to disseminate anything he wants to a group of uncritical, loyal supporters who will regurgitate it all — not just on the website, but to family, in the workplace. It’s truly remarkable.
I wish I could provide you with a more sophisticated analysis of the platform, but I will spare you. Frankly, it’s just too stupid. And, while I do believe we should take all major political actors seriously, in this case, I think it’s best we all just laugh. You certainly can’t use it to change anyone’s mind or…you’ll get banned.
